French (FL)

The teaching of foreign language French is geared towards the award of IGCSE French by the end of Year 11. Boys may sit the examination early if ready and teaching of this subject is arranged accordingly.

Although the main thrust of foreign language teaching of French up to IGCSE is on the language itself, boys will also be introduced to literature through anthologised extracts and will be expected to learn some poetry by heart.

French is also available for study as a foreign language, with the accompanying study of literature, in the VIth Form (age 16-18).  Here the teaching is aimed to prepare boys for the Cambridge Advanced Level examination. Boys may sit the language component of this subject early, but the literature element is not available before Year 12 (age 16 approx).
