Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), also called Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is a popular ocupation for young graduates keen to discover new countries and cultures. Chavagnes has 15 years of experience in teaching young people English from scratch in a school setting, and we now offer an opportunity for young gradates to “learn the ropes” in a 1-week intensive course.
We organise a special “Certificate in TEFL” course each year in the last week of May. This course includes 25 hours of lessons from experienced teachers of English as a foreign language, with a particular focus on the requirements of the Cambridge ESOL exams often used in schools (KET, PET and First Certificate).
The dates for 2018 are : Monday 28th May to Friday 1st June.
The course presents students (who will normally be English native speakers and hold a university bachelors degree or equivalent) with an introduction/revision of some esssentials for aspiring TEFL teachers:
- The basics of English grammar for learners
- The common mistakes learners make and how to correct them
- The structure of Cambridge ESOL exams (KET, PET and FCE)
- Different teaching methods and styles
- Introduction to some available resources and how to use them effectively
- Basics of classroom technique, discipline and lesson-planning
- Teaching children and teaching adults
- Using games and other fun activties
- Professional standards for teachers
A full transcript and a Certificate in TEFL, awarded by the Chavagnes Studium, is presented to students who successfully complete the course. For those seeking to find employment teaching English as a foreign language, this course is a useful first step, demonstrating your solid grasp of the the theory behind TEFL.
The cost for this course is 350 euros. Full board accommodation is available for the week at Chavagnes International College at a cost of 250 euros.
The Diploma in TEFL
During the month of June, a limited number of students who have completed the Certificate course may work towards our Diploma in TEFL, which is a more valuable qualification, attesting to students’ practical skills as well as their theoretical knowledge. In order to qualify for the Diploma, candidates must participate in our annual intensive 4-week English course as trainee teachers, by arrangement with Chavagnes International College. During the course students will be teaching English to small classes of school-age pupils from France and Spain. After 50 hours of teaching, regular meetings with a tutor, and 5 separate observed lessons in which students are assessed against British government teacher standards, students complete a written report of their teaching practice which counts towards the final mark. Successful participants are awarded a Diploma in TEFL in addition to a full transcript detailing their performance in all assessed skill areas. The dates of the June course this year are 4th to 30th June 2018.
More details about this course are supplied on request.
