Boys enjoy competition and enquiry-based learning: if one gives boys a difficult task involving an information gap that they must fill, they tend to be motivated by the challenge. If and when they fail, they bounce back; a vital trait which develops resilience during their secondary education and sets them for life. In fact, boys make great independent learners and researchers. They have the power to teach themselves if you put them in the right context for it: the context of a challenge.

At Chavagnes we try to keep up to date with the latest research into how boys learn best. There is more and more evidence to show that boys and girls have different ‘circuitry’ in their brains. Educationalists are slowly beginning to admit that the main reason why boys and girls were in general educated separately – in all cultures throughout history – until recent years, is this: they have different needs.

Advocates of co-education claim that mixed schools help to break down gender stereotypes, but the evidence contradicts this. In single-sex schools, once pupils make subject choices for GCSE and A Level, boys are much more likely to choose subjects like English Literature, Art and Modern Languages, while far more girls choose Physics and Maths in girls’ schools. Similarly, this is because boys and girls are able to choose subjects on their own merits, rather than worrying about whether their choices make them unmasculine or unfeminine in the minds of the opposite sex. In a good boys’ school, where masculinity is understood, fostered and positively channelled, the pupils feel secure in their masculine identity and do not have to prove it to themselves and others in the way so many angry teenage boys do these days: by violence, irresponsiblity, low self-esteem and low ambition.

Boys only schools have the key advantage of being free to adapt teaching styles to the specific needs of boys.

[1
7,3,8,9
